The phone rang that evening, but Promise was sound asleep. Mitch smiled on the other end of the pay phone; he knew she would never realize that he didn’t come home after work. He had hours of freedom ahead of him and a young, pretty colleague on his arm. Mitch spent the night bar hopping with Ivy Copur; he had never felt so alive. He didn’t have to worry about paying the bills, building a nursery, or a pregnant wife; he was just Mitch. Around midnight, Ivy pulled up to Mitch’s front walk and stopped her car. She came around to the passenger side and helped Mitch to his feet. He had released his pent up frustrations that night, but was having difficulty walking to the door. Ivy put her arm around him to steady him, and he turned his head and kissed her.

She was surprised, but leaned into the kiss. She had had a crushed on him since he started working at the lab, and she wasn’t going to let this opportunity go to waste. Once their lips separated, Mitch seemed to have his bearings back and he stumbled through the threshold and into the bedroom. Ivy started her car and drove away, as Mitch snuggled under the covers with his wife.
