Chapter One

“Mom, why does she have to move in with us,” Sara Beth whined.

“Honey, Imogen has fallen on some hard times and she needs a good friend,” Annie said to her daughter.

“She’s never helped us out.”

“Yes, she has. Your Auntie Imogen helped me to put my life back together after your father left,” Annie said briskly.

“But, I don’t want her to move in,” Sara Beth pouted.

“It doesn’t matter what you want,” Annie sighed. “I am the mother and what I say goes.”

“Fine, but don’t expect me to be nice.”

A few days later…

“Is that the last box, Imogen,” Annie asked, as he stumbled to the door.

“I think so,” Imogen replied. “I’m really going to miss this apartment; I’ve had some good times here.”

“Explain to me again why you are leaving.”

“Well Annie, I don’t have a job anymore, so I can’t afford the rent.”

“How did your boyfriend cost you your job,” Annie questioned.

“He wasn’t just my boyfriend,” Imogen explained, “He was my client, too. I got so caught up in making him a famous artist that I dropped all my other clients. Unfortunately, once Billy became famous, he dropped me and I was fried, because I wasn’t bringing any money into the agency.”

“Ah, I see,” Annie said, while placing the last box in her van. “I just can’t believe Billy left you, especially after everything you did for him.”

“That’s the nature of the business,” Imogen said as he lit a cigarette. “I never should’ve gotten romantically involved with him, but I just couldn’t help myself.”

“You never can,” Annie teased.

“Ha ha, you’re so funny.”

“You love me,” Annie teased.

“I wonder why sometimes.”

“Because I’m letting you come live with me and I’m not charging rent.”

“You are a good friend, Annie. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“You would be on the street,” Annie said sarcastically, as she opened the van door. “Come on, we have to get going, Sara Beth will be home from school soon.”

“I’m coming,” Imogen shouted, as she took one last look at her apartment. “I certainly did have some wonderful times here.”
