The Globe Family, Part Three
Post in: Global Warming
Annie laid awake, starring at the ceiling in her bedroom. She longed to close her eyes and find solace in her dreams, but she kept seeing Granite’s face behind her eyelids. She’d been thinking about him all evening, remembering all the good times they had shared as a family. “Why did Imogen have to ask me about him,” she questioned. “I haven’t thought about him in three years and now he is all I seem to be able to grasp my mind around.” Annie pushed back her covers and sat up. She was preparing herself to move, to find something, anything to distract her mind, but she quickly decided against that plan. She didn’t want to risk waking Sara Beth, so she laid back down and crossed her arms over her chest.
“I know what I’ll do,” she thought to herself, “I’ll think about someone else.” Annie racked her brain to find another male figure to occupy her mind. It didn’t take her long to picture Marcus Dryden, her new neighbor, standing at her door, but she didn’t want to think about him either. Marcus was handsome, intelligent, witty and kind, but Annie wasn’t ready to trust another man with her heart; she could see herself falling for Marcus and that scared her. Annie’s eyes began to burn and she stifled a loud yawn, “I need to get some sleep; maybe, I should try counting sheep.” She closed her eyes and began counting puffy, white balls of fur, but soon the sheep took the form of Granite and Marcus. Annie clenched her eyes shut and kept counting; soon she was softly snoring and tossing fitfully in her bed.
“Good morning, Imogen,” Annie yawned.
“Boy do you look awful this morning,” Imogen said, reaching for the coffee pot.
“Thanks, I really needed to hear that,” Annie said scowling.
“Sorry, is something wrong,” Imogen asked with concern on her face.
“I had a rough night’s sleep, that’s all. Sara Beth, the bus is here,” Annie yelled into the living room. Sara Beth swung her backpack over her shoulder, ran into the kitchen and kissed her mom on the cheek and then rushed out the door.
