Gypsy Rose“Turning Gray”
“Anna, stop fiddling with that TV and come help me with the cake,” Tony shouted from the kitchen.
“Oh hush,” Anna said, twisting a wire with her screw driver, “I’ll be there in one minute. Plus, you are better at the cooking thing, then I am.”
“You promised you’d help, though,” Tony huffed. “It’s not fair if I do all the work.”
“Then call Derek in to help you,” Anna said, pushing the TV back into place.
“He is busy doing his homework,” Tony said, gritting his teeth. “Besides, he’s only a little kid, he can’t properly decorate the cake.”
“Hey,” Derek shouted, coming out of his bedroom, “I may be little, but I know how to decorate a birthday cake.”
“Don’t worry, Derek,” Anna said, hugging his shoulders, “Tony doesn’t think either of us can decorate a cake as well as he can.”
“I never said that…”
“Wait, be quiet,” Anna said, putting a finger to her lips. “I heard a car door slam outside, I think it might be mom.”
Tony glanced at the clock in the kitchen, “No, it can’t be. She called earlier and said she’d be late.”
“Hey kids,” Thomas said smilingly. “I see you have everything set for your mother’s birthday.”
“Dad,” Anna said, giving him a quick hug, “you scared us, we thought you were mom.”
“Sorry to disappoint you guys,” Thomas giggled, patting Tony on the back. “She should be home soon, though.”
“Well, we are all set for her to get here,” Derek said, pulling out a chair. “She is going to love the cake we made her.”
“Excuse me, buddy,” Tony said, as he placed the cake on the kitchen table, “who made the birthday cake?”
“We all helped,” Derek said, sticking out his bottom lip.
“And exactly what did you do,” joked Tony.
“I supervised,” Derek said, proudly crossing his arms over his chest.
“Shush, you two,” interjected Anna, “mom’s car just pulled up. Quick, shut the lights off.”
Roslynn pushed her way in the front door and was met by her screaming family. She stumbled back in shock, but was steadied by Thomas’s strong embrace.
“Happy Birthday, my love,” he whispered into her ear. “The kids worked hard to make this a special day for you.”
“Oh my,” Roslynn stuttered, as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. “That cake is just wonderful!”
“Blow out your candles, mom,” Derek chanted, jumping up and down. “Blow them out and make a wish!”
“Okay, okay,” smiled Roslynn, as she bent down to blow out the small, flickering flames.
When all the candles had been extinguished, Roslynn felt her joints stiffen and face wrinkle. Her family clapped and shouted, as she spun around and aged into a lovely elder.
Thomas grabbed her tightly around the waist and softly breathed into her ear, “You look as lovely today as the day I married you.” He kissed her gently and smiled, as a light blush colored her cheeks. “I have another surprise for you.”
“I don’t know if I can handle another one,” Roslynn said laughing.
“You’ll love this one, I promise,” Thomas said, taking her hand. “I borrowed a camera again, so we can take an updated family portrait; everybody get outside.”
“Dad, is that the last one,” Anna asked, massaging her cheeks. “I have to get to work.”
“Yeah dad,” added Tony, “I need to call Pam and work out our plans for this weekend.”
“Yes, yes,” Thomas laughed, “you guys are released from family duty.”
Roslynn wrapped her arm around her husband’s waist and looked up into his face, “Thank you.”
“For what,” Thomas said, gently kissing her on the forehead.
“For this,” Rosylnn smiled, “for my family.”

Awww Carrie that was great!! Such a sweet family
Awwwwww, she’s a beautiful elder! A little sad to see her age, but happy to see things going well for the family.
Awwwww! She’s an elder now, great update Carrie!
Roslynn is a great looking elder - and a cute outfit too! That’s so sweet, with all the kids helping to throw her a birthday party - I’m glad things are going well for her.
Hehe, I love the interactions with the siblings. It’s so natural! Especially the way they’re pushing each other’s buttons.
That’s sweet that they’re working on a surprise party for their mom. Hehe, happy birthday, Roslynn!! Roslynn turned out to be a pretty elder. I love when they don’t suddenly go from being pretty adults to icky elders. Congrats! I love her outfit too! Very cute family portrait. *giggle* I am so glad her husband happily accepted Derek and that Komei never came back to darken her life again.
What a great family, thanks for the update they are a fun family to read about.
Wow, how fast they all grow! Little Derek was just a little tiny baby last we read.
And I agree, you’re so good with the conversation pieces in your story–it’s just so natural. This was a great update!
The family is beautiful. They really love each other.
