Gypsy Rose
“Back Home”

Derek sat quietly in his bedroom, watching the hands on his clock tick by, he only had five more minutes to wait. His parents had retired to bed an hour ago and he could hear their quiet breathing each time he crept silently to their door. Everything was panning out exactly as he had planned, he knew Roslynn and Thomas were both exhausted, since their careers were keeping them exceedingly busy. The stress of worrying about Anna and Tony also had a tiring affect on both his parents and he knew they would stay sound asleep for the rest of the night; he’d have no problem leaving and getting back into the house undetected.
The remaining five minutes ticked silently by and he took one last trip past his parent’s bedroom door; he was greeted once again with the soft sound of snoring. He crept out the front door and jogged quickly to the awaiting car, “Right on time, m’dear.”

“Everything okay,” Amy said nervously, fiddling with the radio dials.

“Everything is perfect,” Derek said climbing into the car, “don’t worry so much. Now let’s get going, I don’t want to be late.”

“Okay, okay, your sure you want to do this,” Amy asked, looking into Derek’s eyes.

“Of course I’m sure, now let’s hit the road.”

“All right,” Amy said, lightly putting her foot on the gas pedal, “to the concert we go.”
———————————————————————————————————

A soft, purple haze was beginning to color the sky when Amy’s car chugged its way to Derek’s house, “The concert was amazing. I’m so glad you decided to come with me.”

“I am too,” Derek said removing his seat belt. “It was totally worth disobeying my parents, I wouldn’t even care if I got punished.”

Amy gasped, “You really think you’re going to get punished?” She looked pleadingly at Derek, “I don’t want to get into trouble, my parents would kill me if they knew I helped you sneak out.”

“Don’t worry,” Derek said calmly, “my parents are so tired from working and worrying about my siblings, that they’ve been sleeping very soundly. I know they don’t even know I’ve left.”

“Okay,” Amy said chewing on her nails, “if you say so.”

“Everything is fine, I promise. I have to get inside, though, and get a few hours of sleep. I’ll see you at school in a couple hours.”

“I’ll be a little late,” Amy said, glancing at Derek’s front door. “My mom gave me permission to skip first period, it’s great being a senior.”

“Yeah,” Derek said wistfully, “sure it is. Well then, I’ll see you at lunch and thanks for the concert.” He leaned over and softly kissed her cheek. “Drive safe on your way home.”

“Bye Derek, see you later.”

Derek stood on the sidewalk and gave Amy a slight wave, then he slowly crept towards the front door. He pressed his ear to the cold, wooden surfaced and smiled at the quiet sound of nothingness. They hadn’t missed me, he thought happily. He opened the door soundlessly and tiptoed quietly into the house.

He continued his silent creeping until he reached his bedroom. Once inside, he plopped down on his bed and smiled broadly to himself, he’d just had the best night of his life and soon, he’d be moving away to college. Then I can finally start my life as a musician, he thought happily, even if mom and dad don’t approve.

Yay for Tony! I hope Derek doesn’t go and get himself into trouble… Ros sounds ready to snap. Great update!

Oooo, Derek is a little bit of a rebel. Amy is kind of a goody-goody though. I wonder if his rebelliousness will work out with her rule abiding in the long run.

I very much enjoy your style of writing! Great update. Poor Ros. And Derek is really looking for trouble, isn’t he? Hmmmm I wonder if it will find him.

Aww, poor Roslynn. :-( If Anna knew how much this was eating away at her mother, I think she’d at least bring her new husband by to meet her folks. That doesn’t say much for Ramin though, that he was willing to marry Anna without insisting on meeting her parents. *tsks* Oh, Derek is just ASKING for trouble there! And poor Amy is trying hard to be a conscientious girlfriend too. Given hwo upset she is with Anna, I think Derek is being foolish. Well, he got lucky and he had a great night. But it’s too bad he can’t think of how frantic his parents would be if they’d woken to find him gone. And he’s already planning on going into a career he knows they won’t like. *shakes her head sadly*

ooohh - I love the flowers around your house! oh - hehe, classic baby of the family - taking advantage of mom & dad being absorbed with the older siblings, while he gets away with everything! LOL! Amy’s a sweetie, I hope she gets to go to college with Derek :) Roslynn’s going to have to realize that her little girl’s grown up, before too much time has passed - she’s missing out on her daughter’s new life!

Oh my! Derek, you silly boy! Your mother has enough grief to deal with…she doesn’t need you sneaking out of the house and planning to be a rock star! Sheesh! Oh well, at least he is a handsome fella!
